Despite the lousy impression they give flapping about with legs dangling when they fly, pooks are found on many offshore islands about New Zealand so they must know a thing or two about staying aloft!
They have a gawky flight style, awkward in take-off and often crash-landing into trees or scrub.
Although they don't usually travel far, writer Ian Jameison notes one bird who was moved 98km from home and was able to find its way back in 8 days, and another banded bird who was found to have travelled 240km!
